Because Paris is always a good idea...

Yes, Paris...again, with Ryan!!  It was amazing to meet up with Ryan in Paris and almost a bit surreal. He and I had been to Paris in October 2009, right after I had taken the CA Bar. It was amazing to think of where the last two years have taken both of us...and somehow...we met back again in beautiful Paris.  We charged up our Velib membership and headed out to conquer the city by bike. There is nothing. nothing. more fantastic than Paris by bike. It was truly breathtaking.

The only down side was that all of Europe had also decided that Paris is always a good idea, and so it was insanely packed! But we were able to brave the crowds and eat falafel and bike around.  Ariane even invited us over for a traditional French dinner at her apartment.

We stayed in Montmartre, such a nice neighborhood!

Falafel!!

We went to the Pere Lachaise Cemetery...famous for all the famous people who are buried there...but then we were getting bad vibes and so wanted to leave, but couldn't get out fast enough, when...

THIS black cat crossed our path (ack) and then stared at us with its crazy eyes. freaky. AND it was Halloween.

Ryan and I then headed back to my home turf -- Rome!  We wandered around and hit up some of my favorite spots and restaurants. I think we covered the entire city in two days. Nicely done. I am not sure that I impressed Ryan with my Italian skills (I know, I know, 11 months in, I should be fluent by now...), but we got by and had a great time!

It took Ryan a few days, and questioning some native Romans, to believe that the water running out of fountains all over the city is drinkable.

The total destruction of Rome...and some quick trips to Tuscany

E' vero. Fires. Floods. What is happening Rome?!  Well, the good news is that we have survived and things are totally back to normal. In fact, you would never know that two weeks ago the Black Bloc made a resurgence in Rome during an otherwise peaceful rally which resulted in the burning of cars in San Giovanni, tear gas flying around Rome and the closure of some metro stops (the only way I was effected).  I was tucked safely away at a beautiful spa in Chianciano Terme in southern Tuscany.  In fact, I had no idea what was going on in the city until I got home, saw the metro closed and then met up with some friends who had been in the center of the action--with videos to prove it.

The streets of Rome

The peaceful spa I went to in Tuscany.

Then this last week, a GIANT storm came down on Rome and literally flooded the streets and made then rivers, fast running rivers.  I naively headed out for work, with an umbrella, and quickly had to retreat back to the safety of my dry house.  Every road I tried to cross was knee deep (at least) with water. Then the metro shut down because it was flooded. Finally, after literally forging rivers, drenching my favorite knee high boots along with my entire outfit--two hours after I left the house, I ended up at work.

Disasters aside...I was lucky to have a Ariane in town visiting from beautiful Parigi. We explored some new bars and restaurants and ended up in Assisi on Saturday. Assisi is a beautiful and peaceful little Tuscan town tucked away on a hillside. Such a nice day!

Some MacGyvers hard at work to fill the water bottle :-)

Capri, ci vediamo nei miei sogni...

Ciao!

This last week was truly a beautiful week, topped off with a quick weekend trip to the breath taking Capri! It was getting to be mid-week and the weather was still warm so we thought...perche no, another weekend of summer!!

The rest of the week in quick highlights, work is good but busy--always incredibly interesting. I have resumed playing tennis!!! yay!  And I joined Rome's version of Equinox...yes, a fancy gym in Testaccio.  But, I took a workout class taught in--ITALIAN--and while it was a bit challenging, I think my Italian will really improve quickly--gamba destra, gamba sinestra!

And then to the weekend--Capri is a little island in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the coast from Sorrento. I have always heard about Capri being so posh and literally a home to the stars (yes, we saw Dolce and Gabbana's house and Armani's seaside mansion), but it also was just a really truly beautiful island.

To get to Capri, we took every kind of public transportation there was--train to Naples, taxi to the Ferry, Ferry to Capri, funiculare to the top of the hill and finally arrived at our breath-taking hotel which over looked the Fraglioni. Amazing.

We swam in the beautiful water, took a little chair lift to the highest peak on the island, relaxed and took un giro di isola on a boat!

I think I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Bellissima.

So you can better picture the beauty :-)

View from our hotel...amazing.

Ale on the chair lift. It was so peaceful!

Aww a flower pic, reminds me of my mom!  Ti voglio bene!

All the cabs had the roofs cut off! haha so funny

Spritz in the piazzetta...obviously.

La grotta azzurra. We got into a row boat from our other boat and had to lay flat to get into the grotta....ma, e' bellissima, e' vero???

A Rome Moment

I was randomly sitting and waiting for my roommate to rent a car to go to Ikea and was holding the ironing board that she wanted to return (...), when this American lady decided to comment on me "traveling with an ironing board".  Much to her surprise, I responded in English to explain why I was holding a giant ironing board, which of course was met with a barrage of questions, "Where are you from in the states?", "What are you doing here?", "Are you studying here?" "YOU WORK here??"

Unfortunately the car rental line was really slow, so I was stuck talking to this inquisitive woman for quite some time.  But as I explained to her why and what I was doing in Rome, her reaction (constant gasping and wondering how I got to be so "lucky") to me describing what has become my everyday life reminded me of really how amazing it is.

And so, I'm having a Rome moment.

Hej hej Sweden!

Hej!

Yes, now I've gone Swedish!  This last weekend, I went to Gothenburg, Sweden to visit Johanna!  I know, I know, she had only left Rome last week, but I missed her already!  And why not go to Sweden, I had heard some amazing things...as it turned out....Sweden was really cool to see.  It felt almost like being back in the US, but with better looking and more fashionably dressed people all around.

I have included a map of Sweden just in case you are as clueless as I was about just how HUGE the country actually is.  I was in Gothenburg (Goteborg) which is actually pretty far south in Sweden.

Sweden really was as idyllic as all the Swedes I know had built it up to be.  It was clean, quiet, but still interesting and fun. Everyone spoke perfect English which felt like a slight relief to me after 9 months of bumbling around in Italian.  It was very very cold, especially compared to the 35+ degree weather in Rome, but fun to be wintery and cozy. Although, as Johanna kept reminding me--this is fall, not winter. So, ack to think of how cold it can get in the winter...  But in doing some shopping while I was there, I was fooled into buying winter clothes, which being back in Rome has reminded me, I will not be wearing for awhile.

We ate meatballs, mashed potatoes, delicious seafood, including fresh shrimp and salmon, a cinnamon roll the size of a large plate (oh my), and plenty of gummy candy (man, do the Swedes love their gummy candy).

I can not wait to return to Sweden!  What a fun, relaxing and all around great weekend in good ol' Scandanavia!

Adjö for now!

Yes, it was as huge as it looks.
